1-on-1 Coaching with J Scott Chapman
Strong enough to finish your 100. Strong enough to get off the toilet the next morning.
I coach mountain ultrarunners to build the endurance and full-body strength to race big mountain days — and to live a full, capable life in the same body that carries you to the finish line.

Stronger for race day.
Stronger for the rest of your life.
My coaching philosophy is simple: my job is to make you a stronger person so you can live a full life. The hundred-miler is the milestone. The body that can do it — and keep doing things for decades — is the point.
That's why every plan I write includes strength training. Not because it's trendy — because at mile 80 your quads are the only brakes you have left, and because the morning after a 30-hour finish, when your hip flexors have formally resigned, you'll be using your upper body to roll yourself out of bed. We train for that too.
We'll figure out what matters to you, weigh the trade-offs honestly, and pick the path that fits your life — then build the engine, the legs, and the durability to get you down it.
Your Coach Built the Instrument
Most coaches squint at the same generic charts as everyone else. I built my own analytics platform — the free Ready for Ultra app — and I read your data with it every week: your climb rate trends, your time in each band of terrain steepness, your aerobic threshold measured from your real heart rate data, and how all of it stacks up against your goal race's actual course profile.
When your plan changes, it changes because of what your data says — not because a template said it was week six.
What You Get
Everything below is included in every coaching block. No tiers, no upsells.
A real start-up call
Your goals, your history, your schedule, and the trade-offs you're actually willing to make. The plan starts from your life, not a template.
A custom plan, rebuilt every week
Running and strength, written for you and updated weekly based on how training actually went — not how the spreadsheet hoped it would.
Strength training, built in
Programming for race durability and life durability. Strong legs for the descents, and a strong everything-else for the morning after.
Weekly data review in the app
I read your numbers in the Ready for Ultra app every week — climb rate trends, time in each steepness band, threshold changes — and adjust the plan from evidence.
Two 30-minute calls a month
Or one 60-minute deep dive. Plus weekly check-in emails and unlimited plan questions in between.
A race-day pacing plan
Built from your goal race's actual grade profile, so you know what the course will ask of you before it asks.

Thirty minutes. You bring your goal race and your training history — or just sync the free app and I'll bring your numbers. I'll tell you honestly where you stand, what I'd change, and whether coaching even makes sense for you right now.
No pressure, no script. Worst case, you leave with a clearer plan than you came with.

What does ultramarathon coaching with Ready for Ultra cost?
Coaching costs $300 per 4-week block. That includes custom run and strength programming updated weekly, a weekly review of your training data, two 30-minute calls (or one 60-minute call) per month, weekly check-in emails, and a race-day pacing plan. There are no contracts — and if the first block isn't a fit, it's refunded.
Is J Scott Chapman a certified running coach?
Yes. Scott is a UESCA-certified ultrarunning coach. He is also a multiple-time finisher of 100-mile and 200-mile races, including the Bighorn 100, Copper Kings 100, and Across the Years 200 (7th overall), with results verifiable on UltraSignup.
Does coaching include strength training?
Yes — every plan includes strength programming. The goal is to make you a stronger person who can live a full life, not just survive one race. You build the legs to handle hours of descending and the upper body that gets you out of bed the morning after a 30-hour finish.
Do I need the Ready for Ultra app to be coached?
No, but it's free and it's built into how the coaching works. The app analyzes your real Strava data — climb rate, terrain steepness mix, aerobic threshold from cardiac drift — and Scott reviews those numbers every week to adjust your plan.
Can you coach me through my first ultramarathon or first 100-miler?
Yes. First ultras and first 100-milers are a specialty. The plan meets you at your current fitness and builds the capacity, strength, and race-day skills to get you to the finish — at a pace your life can sustain.
What is the free training review?
A free 30-minute call where Scott looks at your goal race and your training history and tells you honestly where you stand and what he would change. There's no obligation and no sales script — worst case, you leave with a clearer plan than you came with.
Do you coach athletes remotely?
Yes. Coaching is fully remote and works for athletes anywhere. Scott is based in Montana and trains in the Northern Rockies, but plans, calls, and weekly reviews all happen online.
Want the full race résumé? It's on the about page — and verifiable on UltraSignup.
